BEIJING, China (AFP) - A Chinese man has been awarded more than half a million yuan (US$62,000) in compensation, 19 years after a hospital severed his penis by mistake, local media reported yesterday.
Dou Xueliang, a resident of Anshan
city in northeast China's Liaoning province, suffered the tragic loss
in 1987 when he went to the hospital to have a penis infection treated,
the sina.com website said.
Doctors mistook Dou's problem for
a cancer and removed most of his penis, "causing him to lose his sexual
functions", according to the report.
Dou, who also became a drug user
as the hospital's lavish use of anesthetic got him addicted, launched a
court battle nine years ago to seek justice.
The battle ended this week in a
verdict, passed by the Liaoning Higher People's Court, ordering three
hospitals involved in treating Dou to pay a total of 565,101 yuan.
Dou was quoted as saying the money was not enough, and that he would continue to struggle for his rights.
